The sprawling metropolis of Tokyo is an agglomeration of smaller wards, cities and towns, of which there are still many small, intimate neighborhoods with winding, narrow and nameless streets. But increasingly, the vast city of Tokyo is comprised of equally vast spaces. Smaller neighborhoods are giving way to grand developments of office buildings, apartment towers and shopping centers, fronted by open plazas, green spaces and wide boulevards that seem a microcosm of the entire metropolis. However, the 38 million people who call Tokyo home appear dwarfed, confused, almost trapped, in a maze of haphazard streets, new development and overwhelming cityscapes.

“Tokyo Metropolis” explores this interplay between Tokyoites and the complicated, outsized streetscapes they navigate along their daily journeys.
